The United States Collegiate Athletic Association held its 2017 National Convention from June 11-14th in Norfolk, Virginia at The Main, a brand-new Hilton property. The annual meeting brought together member institutions from around the country to discuss current issues and bring forth ideas and legislation to improve the organization.
The National Convention began with the inaugural Hall of Fame dinner on Sunday, where the first 14 members were inducted into the USCAA Hall of Fame. Included in that class were 10 Legacy Class members, recognizing individuals who made meritorious contributions to National Little College Athletic Association (NLCAA) and National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA), the predecessors to the USCAA which began in 2001. The night featured a meet and greet between USCAA staff, current members, and the Hall of Fame class, opening reception, dinner, and award ceremony. The USCAA also crowned the Directors Cup champion from the 2016-17 academic year, Cleary University.
On Monday morning, the opening session of the convention was held. Features included review of the 2016-17 USCAA Annual Report, the “State of the Association” from Executive Director Matthew Simms, operational highlights from Associate Director Michael Goodman, and the Championships Report from Phillip Hines. Additionally, the USCAA awarded the Garth Pleasant Honorary Athletic Director of the Year award to Pat Todd from Florida College. Outgoing board members Matthew Richards (12 years) and Keisha Pexton (6 years) were also recognized for their service and contributions to the association.
Following the opening session, the National Convention kicked off its professional development seminars. Topics for these workshops included a managing part-time coaches workshop, a panel on fundraising with Jack Ankerson (former San Antonio Spurs GM and Executive Director of the Hampton Roads Sports Commission), Nancy Helman (Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau Director) and Jerry Frostick (President of J&A Racing), Eligibility 101 with Michael Goodman, a training session on eligibility submission with ACS Athletics’ Chad Mandrell, a forum on recruitment strategies, and a live streaming workshop with Boxcast. Off-site sessions were available in the afternoon, with the options being a facility tour of the new Old Dominion University basketball practice facility and a hands-on demonstration on drone technology and how it benefits marketing and practice video. The opening day of the convention was capped off with the welcome social, the annual USCAA Cornhole National Championships, food, drinks, and prizes.
Tuesday began with the Town Hall sessions for Championships and Ratings and Selection. Complete notes from the Town Hall sessions are included below. Subcommittees met after the town halls to evaluate discussion from the membership and provide recommendations for policy changes to the USCAA National Office. Recommendations from the subcommittees are included in the business meeting minutes (linked below). The Business Meeting followed lunch and meeting times in the afternoon. During that meeting, legislative proposals and Board of Director nominations were voted upon. Tuesday night’s social events included a trip to Top Golf in Virginia Beach, VA and a Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles Triple A affiliate) baseball game.
Wednesday served as a work day. Meeting time for conferences, the Board of Directors, and more were scheduled. USCAA Executive Director, Matthew Simms, hosted a session on growing and developing the USCAA. This session featured intimate conversation and brainstorming on topics such as membership expansion, conference development, fiscal growth, marketing, and branding with member Athletic Directors.
